One of the clan had made a request…
Several weeks ago, a dear friend, a caring relative, a wise mentor left our space. Before his departure, he requested that my father make a pilgrimage up the Oregon coast to a town called Florence. Our mission was to release his ashes into the arms of the ocean.
A few of his closest soul mates gathered to laugh and cry over the shared memories that had graced our lives. Our stories danced with the breath of our love, which grew and became more defined in the light of his presence. As the time drew closer for us to make our way, we prepared for our journey with the excitement of knowing we were fulfilling a promise to a man who had given all that he had to give.
We found our way along a river shrouded in the whispered moments of time, knowing very well that he had made the same journey many times over the years. We awed at its marvelousness, just as he had when he fell in love with its lush beauty. We grew closer with every turn of the wheel, giving each other the strength of our story with him and with one another.
When we got to Florence, we persisted to create the perfect place. Using our intuition, we navigated to a bend in the road leading out to an ocean crying for what had always belonged to it. We knew we had arrived once we looked to its grandeur. It was time to bring our beloved back home.
Armed with our determination, our commitment, our everlasting devotion, we ventured out towards the choppy sea. The wind played in our hair and led us to the spot where we needed to let go. And we did as we were asked to do. We celebrated with joy as the ashes were swept into the eternal water, some refusing to disperse, others taking flight to an unknown destiny. We added our own essence with yellow roses that skimmed the surface like a constellation of sweetness. We planted a wreath to offset the harshness of the new territory we were entering – a world devoid of his gaze, his wit, his banter.
And in the background, in a world all his own, a child danced, bringing new life to the Earth surrounding us. Showing us the way home, taking us full circle, granting new life born on the wisdom of his youthful words. Giving us the chance to live with joy in our hearts beyond the loss and into the realm that shall connect us forever.
